Friend,
On a normal Veteran’s Day, I send out a note that celebrates the brave men and women who served our country. In a busy and fast-moving world, it’s important to stop what we’re doing and say thanks for the tremendous sacrifices that veterans and their families have made.
But today, saying thank you is just not enough. This is not a normal Veteran’s Day.
That’s because President Trump’s refusal to reopen the government is negatively impacting veterans by cutting off their access to critical benefits. I can’t imagine a worse way to honor their service.
I’ll be specific. This shutdown is preventing more than 900,000 veterans from accessing the GI Bill hotline and more than 100,000 veterans from receiving Veteran Readiness and Employment program counseling and case management services. 56 regional benefits offices are closed to the public. 157 VA cemeteries have stopped performing ground maintenance or placing permanent headstones.
American veterans deserve better. They deserve to be thanked not just by our words, but by our actions. They deserve a government that throws open its door to lend them a hand, not one that shuts them out in a time of need.
It’s time for the White House to come to the table and reopen our government.
Jim
