In a recent longform dispatch, Marco Simoncelli investigated the hardships displaced people encounter on the eastern migration route (Marco Simoncelli)

It’s no secret that the current assault on democracy also targets independent journalism. Amid already-shrinking newsrooms and media closures around the country, the rise of a new authoritarianism has also had devastating consequences for free speech.

As a nonprofit newsroom, Inkstick Media isn’t safe. The White House has openly discussed plans to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofits whose worldviews it disagrees with, and threats against the press have become so routine that they hardly draw a reaction anymore.

Here at Inkstick, we plan to continue working to report on conflicts, the resurgence of fascism, the military industrial complex, and other threats to democracy. In fact, our newsroom hopes to double down on our editorial mandate: investigating the human consequences of endless conflicts and telling these stories from the ground up.

Donate Today

Like all nonprofits, Inkstick relies on reader support to do its work. If you pledge support today, though, it will count as double — the annual NewsMatch campaign will match your donation. In other words, your $100 will get Inkstick $200, and your $500 will give our nonprofit newsroom $1,000.

Your support will go directly toward supporting Inkstick’s reporting. Check out some of our recent work below to get a better idea of why it matters:

  • In late September, Inkstick reporting fellow Tyler Hicks reported on the Trump administration’s push to militarize cities from Washington, DC to Chicago — and the grave consequences federal deployments have had for some of the most marginalized groups in American society.

  • In October, Inkstick reporting fellow Hannah Bowlus took a hard look at the environmental fallout of rocket launches on the California coast. As SpaceX and the Air Force plan to increase launches in an area known for its biodiversity, environmentalists and watchdogs highlight the harm local fauna endure.

  • Since August, Inkstick local reporting fellow Sophie Hurwitz has tracked the ongoing machinist strike that has put Boeing, one of the country’s leading defense giants, on its heels. Even as many striking workers have had to resort to food pantries and second jobs to make ends meet, they have kept up their work stoppage and taken a toll on the company’s production.

  • Last month, Inkstick’s Things That Go Boom podcast, produced in partnership with PRX, took listeners to Georgia, where an anti-war socialist managed to win over enough voters to become a state representative.

  • Just last week, Inkstick regular contributor Issam Adwan introduced readers to the Palestinians in Gaza who say the current ceasefire has so far been little more than a false promise of peace.

That’s just a small sample of our recent work. We’ve also covered the Trump administration’s threats against the anti-fascist movement, the sometimes deadly migration route from Ethiopia through Somalia, and the reckless discussion of relaunching nuclear weapons testing in the US.

The NewsMatch campaign will last until the end of the year, but why wait? Support Inkstick today to make sure your contribution is doubled at no extra cost to you.

With Gratitude,
