Last Tuesday, Democrats achieved something remarkable: a blue wave election with no asterisk. This happened as our leaders in Congress united behind a strong message and showed up to fight in a way that we haven’t seen since before Joe Biden took the debate stage last June and melted our dreams. For one shining moment, we had solidarity. We had spine. We had something real to build on.
It lasted 40 days. Time to log on.
By Sunday night, seven Democratic senators and one independent (who caucuses with us) broke ranks and voted with Republicans to reopen the government. The names will be seared into our collective memory: Durbin, Shaheen, Hassan, Fetterman, Rosen, Cortez Masto, Kaine, and King. Not a single one of them faces reelection in 2026. And Chuck Schumer, their so-called LEaDeR, failed to keep them in line
Look, I get it. The President of the United States was actively starving Americans so that he and his party could withhold affordable healthcare. It was, at times, too much to bear.
But the vast majority of Democratic voters saw this for what it was: an epic squandering of the moral high ground, our only leverage, and the electoral dominance we’d just claimed FOR 40 DAYS. And when we see those eight justifying their capitulation with the claim that none of this was working, even as we fight for the public, sweep elections nationwide, and continue to widen the gap in polls — it makes us wonder what the actual fuck they are talking about.
The Real Horrors
Here’s what we cannot lose sight of, even as we process this betrayal: the absolute depravity Republicans revealed themselves capable of during this shutdown remains our greatest existential threat.
While Americans went hungry, while aid to Africa was cut off leaving people to starve, while Gaza descended further into humanitarian catastrophe, Republicans were living their best lives throwing literal bacchanalias while people suffered. The next weekend, they hosted CPAC, where Milei quite literally dabbed on us after securing a $40 billion bailout. They gorged on stone crab claws by the pound while Americans lined up at food banks.
This is who they are. This is what they do. They fight to annihilate our healthcare system. They fight to starve our neighbors. They weaponize human suffering for political leverage, then celebrate their fascism with champagne and shellfish.

The Path Forward
Yes, these eight Democratic senators embarrassed the hell out of us. Yes, Schumer’s fingerprints are all over this capitulation. Yes, we went from Tuesday’s triumph to Sunday’s collapse in less time than it takes milk to go bad.
We need to hold them accountable. We need to demand better leadership. We need to make it clear that caving to extortion is not strategy.
But we cannot, we absolutely cannot, let this moment distract us from who the real enemy is.
Democrats broke our hearts this week. Republicans are still trying to break our country. There’s a difference, and we need to remember it.
The 97% of Senate and House Democrats who stood strong on the shutdown gave us a foundation. Now we need to build on it: push out the weakness in our leadership by primarying the traitors in our ranks and prepare for the real fight ahead. It’s possible that most Democrats finally understand that.
Because the party willing to starve Americans and dab about it at CPAC isn’t going anywhere.
Neither should we. Here’s what’s next:
