November 10, 2025

Dear John:

It is now day 40 of the government shutdown and the effects are rippling across Minnesota and America. Nearly a million federal workers remain furloughed or without pay. TSA agents and air traffic controllers are among those working without pay, leading to increased absenteeism and concerns for safety. Major airports, including MSP, are facing significant delays and cancellations. Critical food assistance programs and housing subsidies are leaving vulnerable families in limbo.

Sunday evening, the Senate took a major step to reopen the government. I applaud the eight Senate Democrats that joined Senate Republicans to move the funding bill forward. A final Senate vote is expected in the coming days, after which, the bill will head back to the House, where Speaker Johnson has promised swift action.

DC Visitors

I had the privilege of giving a Capitol tour to a group from the district. We even bumped into Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Scalise, and fellow Minnesotan, Majority Whip Emmer!

Thank you to the Minnesota Pork Producers for stopping by the office to discuss Prop 12 and the Farm Bill! I appreciate all the work you do to support family-owned pig farms throughout the district and state.

The AgCountry Farm Credit provides financial services for over 25,000 farmers and ranchers across Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. During our conversation, we covered key elements of the Farm Bill reauthorization and legislation I introduced called the Investing in Rural America Act.

Back in the District

Last week I had the opportunity to meet with multiple amazing groups around the district to discuss topics ranging from the importance of rural healthcare and issues currently impacting small businesses.

It was great to visit the Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center to discuss the Rural Health Transformation Program, designed to strengthen and modernize rural health across the United States. We also discussed a bill I cosponsored, the Rebuild America's Health Care Schools Act of 2025 which aims to strengthen hospital-based education and training programs.

I had the opportunity to tour the Pride Solutions plant in Hutchinson. During the tour, we were able to discuss the rising costs of health insurance for small businesses and the issues this poses to workforce protection.

The Island Living senior living facility is a non-profit dedicated to brining high-quality senior living to Bird Island. Last week, I stopped by for a tour and to discuss home and community based services. Under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, facilities like Island Living will gain flexibility to provide care while preserving individuals independence.

Updates on SNAP Benefits

Roughly 440,000 Minnesotans are recipients of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), including 175,000 children. Due to the Democrat shutdown, funding for this program lapsed on November 1st for the first time in history. Some Minnesotans saw their SNAP payments distributed over the weekend following a court order and a directive from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Friday. However, the USDA sent an update Saturday evening telling states to reverse any payments that were made. These disruptions and conflicting statements are creating real challenges for the Minnesotan families that rely on SNAP. I remain committed to ensuring that Minnesotans have the information and support they need during the shutdown.

Impacts of the Government Shutdown on Travel

Image

Over the past several weeks, Senate Democrats have voted to keep the government closed, prolonging the disruption and uncertainty for millions of Americans. The effects are now reaching critical areas of American life, including air travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that it will be forced to reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 major airports nationwide, a list that includes Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP). This reduction will affect thousands of flights, leading to longer wait times, cancellations, and ripple effects across the country.

If you are planning to travel by air in the coming weeks, be sure to give yourself extra time to account for potential delays.
