John,

Last night, the Senate voted to reopen the government – with 8 Democrats joining Republicans to reach a deal.

Let me be clear: This is not a serious plan, and every Democratic Senator who voted for it should know better.

Their so-called deal delays a vote on extending healthcare subsidies until December. Even if an extension of the ACA credits were to get 60 votes in the Senate, there is no guarantee that House Speaker Johnson will allow a vote on that language in the House.

Johnson alone controls what comes to a vote, and time and again he has shown us he will block overwhelmingly popular, bipartisan legislation rather than risk angering Trump.

We can’t trust Johnson to bring the ACA credits to a vote – and the millions of Americans who are depending on us to fight for their healthcare deserve better.

Trump and today’s GOP don’t care about the economic pressure Americans are under. They are weaponizing their pain as leverage, and Senate Democrats’ bowing to the pressure is not meeting the importance of this moment.

I want this shutdown to end, but this is not the right way. I’ll be voting no on this deal in the House.

Thank you,

Mike
