Staying in touch with Kansans however I can is incredibly important to me. Hi John.

The current government shutdown is now the longest in American history.

I understand this is incredibly frustrating. Every day, I’m pushing for a bipartisan solution to end this crisis.

At a time like this, it’s easy to get discouraged by partisanship. But despite all the noise, I know good ideas can still come from both parties.

Republicans and Democrats are both duly chosen by the people. If our democracy is going to work, we must be professional and find common ground whenever we can.

Anything is possible when Kansans and people in both parties work together. And I know that because I’ve passed three bipartisan bills through the House this year.

Bipartisan Action to Help Veterans

My mom served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. Supporting our servicemembers and veterans should never be a partisan issue.

That’s why I introduced the bipartisan SERV Act to help veteran small business owners succeed – which passed the House.

I introduced the SERV Act to better support veterans who are transitioning from service to entrepreneurship.

I was honored to work with my Republican colleague Rep. Mark Alford from Missouri on this bill.

It helps veterans succeed by better identifying the challenges they face. Then, it helps them better access existing resources so they can start and grow their businesses while creating jobs.

I’m pleased the SERV Act passed the House earlier this year with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Bipartisan Action to Help Small Businesses

But there’s more Republicans and Democrats can do together to grow our economy.

Both parties can agree that entrepreneurs shouldn’t spend unnecessary time or money figuring out government rules that don’t make any sense.

That’s why I introduced and helped pass the bipartisan Protect Small Businesses from Excessive Paperwork Act.

Small businesses are a pillar of our local economy. They’re innovating, unclogging supply chains, and creating jobs.

I’m pleased this bipartisan bill was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

It ensures that small businesses have the time and support they need to comply with federal law and reporting requirements without risking their livelihoods.

Bipartisan Action to Help People Recover

Both parties can also work together to help people recover from substance use. By helping people rebuild their lives, people in need can become independent again and rejoin the workforce.

That’s why I introduced and helped pass the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery through Effective Employment and Reentry (CAREER) Act.

The CAREER Act fosters workforce development, vocational training, and the acquisition of vital skills for people recovering from substance use.

The CAREER Act helps people reenter the workforce and maintain gainful employment.

Substance use has devastated far too many Kansas families. We must ensure those recovering from addiction are supported and have access to good-paying jobs.

I know this isn’t an easy time. The ongoing shutdown is causing serious harm to hardworking Kansans.

It’s time to get back to making a difference – a better future where both parties work together.

It's an honor to serve you and your family in the U.S. House of Representatives. Please visit my website if you need help due to the shutdown and always feel free to contact me.

My warmest regards,
