John,
Late last night, the Senate agreed to a deal to end the government shutdown. Eight Democratic Senators joined Republicans – despite the so-called deal not including an immediate vote on healthcare subsidies.
Instead, it delays a vote to December. It’s my belief that
if Republicans refuse to make access to healthcare a priority right now, they never will.
We can’t afford to leave that up to chance. Not when millions are at risk of losing their coverage or seeing their payments double, triple, or even quadruple.
The agreement proposed by the Senate fails to meet the urgent needs of our community: affordable healthcare, food for children and families, small businesses, and more are all on the line.
Trump and the Republicans in Congress have consistently disregarded the needs of our communities – instead, using them as political pawns in their partisan agenda. Americans should not bear the brunt of their chaos.
Any deal that doesn’t immediately address the needs of the American people, especially rising healthcare costs, is a betrayal. Full stop.
I want you to know that if the Senate’s deal comes to a vote in the House, I will vote
no. There’s more work to do, and Californians deserve better.
Thank you,
Derek
