How can we better support men and boys?

Dear John,

We know men and boys are in trouble when:

Boys are less likely to graduate from high school on time
Two-thirds of boys report that “no one really knows them”
Men ages 18-24 are more likely to be living with their parents than women of that age, and
They lack optimism for the future and are at higher risk of suicide

We also know there are solutions to the problems plaguing men. For 20 years, FUTURES has been inviting – not indicting – men into the conversation through evidence-based programs that work. Our programs encourage connectivity, healthy relationships, and challenging harmful norms and can help point the way to solutions.

From sports to college campuses to, most recently, online, we have launched programs that reach men where they are:

Our much-heralded Coaching Boys Into Men program has trained thousands of high school coaches to teach young male athletes healthy relationship skills, and that violence never equals strength.
As the pandemic exacerbated our country’s youth mental health crisis, we launched Team: Changing Minds with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, supported by Harry’s Inc. This program trains trusted adults who are already in spaces where young people are (video games, sports) to be able to identify mental health challenges and provide help.
With our partner Equimundo, we commissioned a deep dive into the lives of young men online, which affirmed the dangers of the online world but also the potential for online community and healthy connections. Last year, we launched LinkUp Lab, an innovation hub that will use what we learned to reimagine what young men’s online lives can look like.
What does healthy manhood look like? Our CATAPULT: Campus Action for Healthy Manhood initiative supports student-centered campaigns that ask that question.
