Liberal Democrats We can't let Trump and his allies like Farage bully the BBC

John, the BBC is under attack from Trump and his cronies like Nigel Farage.

Over the weekend, the BBC Director General and CEO of News resigned over an
edited speech of Donald Trump. While that action was clearly wrong, the
reaction from Trump, and others determined to upend our politics, marks a
dangerous moment for our democracy.

Yesterday, Trump pressured the BBC over its leadership and attacked its
journalists as ‘corrupt’. Now, he is threatening legal action.

His Press Secretary has urged people to ‘watch GB News’ instead and even
claimed the resignations as a win for his administration.

We’ve seen the damage Trump’s attacks on the media have done to US democracy.
We can’t let it be repeated here in the UK.

John, we must defend our national broadcaster against those who want to
destroy it - whether from abroad or here in the UK.

The BBC’s strength lies in its independence and impartiality. With this being
eroded, a change of leadership is a chance to turn over a new leaf.

Earlier this year, we called on the BBC to stay true to its role as an
impartial informer and educator, and to ensure that all political voices are
given balanced coverage.

These changes will ensure the BBC is strong enough to stand up to political
pressure, whether foreign or domestic.
