Here is what needs to happen now to reopen the government: House Speaker Mike Johnson must agree to schedule a vote with the same terms agreed upon by Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune
John,
Last night, the Senate advanced a bipartisan bill to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
The Senate deal funds the government through January. It includes a guarantee that the Senate will vote on the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits by the second week of December at the latest.
Here is what needs to happen now to reopen the government: House Speaker Mike Johnson must agree to schedule a vote with the same terms agreed upon by Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Please join us in asking Speaker Johnson to do so immediately. ([link removed] )
The Senate bill is imperfect, but it does the most important thing: It ends a shutdown that is harming millions of Americans.
With the government shutdown, food aid is at risk for the 1 in 8 Americans — 42 million of them — who rely on SNAP benefits. Flight delays are getting worse. Most federal workers have now missed two paychecks.
Many Democrats say they are unhappy that the Senate bill does not extend the ACA tax credits. It merely guarantees a vote on them. But there is actually strong bipartisan agreement in Congress to act and avert the health insurance premium increases that many Americans are scheduled to face in 2026. Once the government reopens, Democrats and Republicans alike should make it their singular focus to find a bipartisan solution.
If Speaker Johnson mirrors the Senate and promises an up-or-down vote on an ACA tax credit expansion bill, there is a real chance a deal can be reached.
Since our inception, No Labels has always believed that government shutdowns represent the ultimate failure of governance. They never achieve anything positive and destroy the public’s trust in their leaders. Both Democrats and Republicans in Washington are responsible for this shutdown, but now is not the time to apportion blame or look backwards.
Now is the time to reopen the government so that Congress – and millions of federal employees – can return to work. Please join us in urging Speaker Johnson to introduce a bill that can reopen the government. ([link removed] )
