Last week, the American people put their trust in Democrats to stand up and fight for them. But last night, eight Senate Democrats betrayed that trust and chose to let Donald Trump and Republicans off the hook.

Let’s be clear: This wasn’t a deal. It was a bailout for Donald Trump’s cruel agenda.

The Republican shutdown has caused immense suffering for Illinois families, and that pain will be compounded exponentially because Democrats caved to this deal.

This Senate deal allows Trump’s billionaire tax breaks to move forward at the expense of health care for millions of Americans. Health care premiums could double. Families will be forced to choose between paying for coverage and putting food on the table. That is not progress — that is surrender.

We all want to see food assistance fully funded and federal workers paid and protected, but health care for millions of Americans cannot be the tradeoff.

As I’ve said since the spring, Republicans do not negotiate in good faith. Last night’s vote plays directly into Donald Trump’s hands and serves as another example of the failures of business as usual.

We need fighters in D.C. — not folders.

And when you send me to the Senate, I will never put Republican interests over working people. I will never bow down to Donald Trump’s cruelty or betray the people of Illinois.
