Dear MoveOn member,
Over the past 40 days, there has been a grueling government shutdown. The lines were clear: Democrats, empowered by our grassroots movement, stepped up to hold the line and protect Americans from skyrocketing health care costs. Republicans, on the other hand, were steadfast in blocking action to address rising health care costs and instead used the shutdown to inflict maximum pain on the American people. They stopped SNAP payments, furloughed federal employees, and nearly halted air travel by withholding pay from air traffic controllers and TSA agents.
Poll after poll shows that Americans supported Democrats for driving a hard bargain to protect ACA subsidies, and a majority blamed Republicans and President Trump for the shutdown.
Despite this, under the helm of Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, eight senators cowered to Republican opposition and voted last night to reopen the government with no concessions on the very issues that started this fight in the first place.
So we come to ask you: Should Chuck Schumer step down as Democratic Senate leader?
We are up against a tyrannical force that is using every opportunity, even a government shutdown, to advance its ruthless political project—one that we have seen time and again separates families, raises costs for the American people, and weaponizes its own military against them. President Trump and Republicans are costing people their lives, livelihoods, and ability to live peacefully in this country. We’ve seen the catastrophic consequences of weak Democratic leadership. Now more than ever, we need real leaders who will fight back against this merciless administration.
All year, MoveOn members have sent a clear message to Democratic leadership: Stand up and fight back. Millions of Americans are struggling with rising health care costs due to the loss of ACA tax credits, and people across the country were counting on Democrats to hold strong and protect their health care.
Last night, because of the concessions Senate Democrats made at the direction of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, millions of families were left without guarantees of affordable health care through the ACA. As a result, many will now face a new reality—one in which they may have to forgo health care altogether because of unmanageable costs.
The stakes are that high, and we need leaders who will step up and meet the moment.
Should Chuck Schumer step down as Democratic Senate leader?
