After lengthy, uncertain, and heated weeks of negotiations at the United Nations Commission on Population and Development Fifty-Third Session (CPD 53), we emerged victoriously!
Thank you for contributing to this historic win against the liberal progressives at the United Nations as they tried to push for abortion during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The concerted efforts to still run the CPD 53 during a pandemic was very unconventional and an attempt to secretly impose abortion on developing countries like mine (Kenya), especially when they were unaware. For the first time ever, United Nations negotiations were held virtually.
Thankfully our CitizenGO team got wind of the negotiations and swung into action immediately.
Just to let you into what we have been through following the negotiations for you, on the 29th of May, the Bureau of Chairs for the 53rd session sent a very controversial document to negotiating members. The document included the very controversial paragraph 15 that would outrightly push for abortion worldwide. We also had concerns about the text in this draft as it would remove sovereignty paragraphs for the first time ever in the history of United Nations negotiations.
When we learned about the controversies in the text, we sent you a petition asking you to help stop the push for abortion at the United Nations during the Coronavirus pandemic. We are happy to say that over 526,000 people like you signed, sending an email message to the Bureau of Chairs.
These negotiations were not only controversial but unpredictable. They involved a lot of secrecy and innuendos which kept most people in the dark. At first, they were to take 3 days, but negotiations ended up taking a whole month.
We thank you for your patience with us even after we kept changing the deadlines for this campaign. This was due to the unpredictable nature of the session. Deadlines were changed a few times due to the fact that the abortion lobby was pushing hard to reach a consensus on this infamous practice in paragraph 15 of the CPD final document.
Notwithstanding, our campaigners remained vigilant and in partnership with teams and friends in New York made sure that we kept you updated.
The draft document kept changing every other time but the consistency in pushing for abortion was evident.
If this were to be adopted as the final document, it would have been a huge loss for the pro-life movement across the globe. We thus had to act quickly by sending more signatures to pile on the pressure as well as making calls to capitals to lobby them. We prepared the materials for an impactful signature delivery (see below).
Thankfully, a number of countries listened to our pleas and rejected the final draft of the text due to its controversy. This meant that the chair of the session had to initiate bilateral talks in order to gain a consensus.
The countries stood their ground and declined to have the draft declaration with the abortion language in it which translated to lack of consensus on the document.
Finally the chair of the session communicated to negotiating members the decision to withdraw the controversial declaration due to lack of consensus which translated to a victory for our campaign.
It was a whole month of wasted time, energy,, and taxpayer money, where negotiations were run that should not have happened in the first place.
We thank you for remaining to be counted upon even when we asked you to support the campaign at the last minute, and for your patience even when we kept extending the deadlines, this was all worth it, many pre-born babies have been saved.
We won, but this struggle is not over. We need more international cooperation from pro-life countries that help us to stop this kind of battle at its beginning, in order to save precious resources for helping the defenseless and most vulnerable.
The United Nations continuously uses humanitarian and developmental aid as a weapon to force African countries like mine, Kenya, to impose abortion and LGBTQ ideology! And anytime it will be needed, CitizenGO will be there.
