Last Week
Last night, 10 Democrats voted with Senate Republicans to reopen the federal government six weeks after they shut it down. And in exchange for their votes, Democrats got… nothing! They failed to win any of the policy concessions they originally demanded!
Liberal activists are furious. They are torching Democrats on social media — calling for senators to resign or face primary challenges.
Conservatives will be tempted to sit back and watch the Left tear itself apart over the shutdown fiasco. However, we have more pressing matters to attend to now.
Remember, the shutdown was about health care.
Democrats threw this temper tantrum because the temporary subsidies they put in place to mask Obamacare’s exploding costs are expiring. The price of health care is once again going to skyrocket because the Affordable Care Act was never affordable. Obamacare was a multi-trillion-dollar boondoggle from the beginning. It has made our health care system worse in every way. It’s been terrible for patients and taxpayers — and only good for insurance companies.
As usual, Donald Trump gets it. He is leaning hard into this debate. On social media over the weekend, Trump urged Republicans to take the money out of Obamacare and send it “directly to the people.” Darn right! Let Americans make their own choices and spend their own money. That’s how conservatives can win.
Obamacare is a disaster. By all means, let’s reopen the government. But the Right needs to reopen the health care debate, too. Republicans should go on offense on Obamacare. President Trump is showing the way. Win the argument. Win the issue. Win the fight on health care.
Conservative Spotlight
RAND PAUL — Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is one conservative who never gave up the fight on Obamacare. Throughout the government shutdown, he has been urging Republicans to re-engage the issue — and make the case against socialized medicine. Paul’s own proposal — the Health Marketplace for All Act — would allow businesses with large memberships, such as Amazon or Costco, to offer health insurance to their members. Paul’s idea would inject unprecedented competition into the insurance industry, driving down costs and improving patient access and care. That’s precisely the kind of principled reform Republicans need to win the fight and finally repeal the Obamacare debacle.
TED CRUZ — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced an excellent new bill last week to make welfare fraud an automatic deportable crime for illegal immigrants. We can’t believe this isn’t already law! Good on Cruz and co-sponsor Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) for trying to close this ridiculous loophole.
CYNTHIA LUMMIS — Conservative Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) got Washington and Wall Street talking last week. In an interview with Bloomberg, the Senate’s “Crypto Queen” said that Bitcoin could be the solution to our national debt. The digital asset’s long-term growth potential, Lummis noted, means it should be part of policymakers’ plans for addressing America’s fiscal crisis.
