[email protected] *Gov. Evers Urges Members of Congress to Condemn Trump Administration Attempts to Yank FoodShare Payments from Nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites* " Governor calls out Republicans in Congress for staying silent as Trump Administration tries to take food away from Wisconsin kids, families, and seniors" MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers, in a letter to Wisconsin’s congressional delegation, called out several Republican members of U.S. [ [link removed] ]Congress [ [link removed] ] for staying silent as the Trump Administration tries to ask Wisconsin to return FoodShare payments for nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, including about 270,000 kids, to help them afford food and groceries. Republican members of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation, including U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and U.S. Reps. Tom Tiffany (WI-07), Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), Tony Wied (WI-08), Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05), and Bryan Steil (WI-01), have thus far largely remained silent about the Trump Administration actively trying to prevent Wisconsin from being able to rely on readily available federal resources to support full November FoodShare payments and efforts to yank newly restored SNAP payments from hungry kids, families, and seniors across the state.
“The Trump Administration has also asked all states to ‘undo’ their distribution of funds and take food away from hungry kids, families, and seniors. Here in Wisconsin, we will do no such thing,” Gov. Evers wrote in the letter to Wisconsin’s members of U.S. Congress. “This is a shocking and disturbing request—and one that should be condemned by every person, regardless of their political beliefs or party. As elected officials, we have an obligation to speak up for and protect and defend the people we serve. I am grateful for U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Mark Pocan, and Rep. Gwen Moore, who already are. I find it deeply troubling the rest of you have failed to do so, and I implore you to change that today.
“This deserves your immediate attention and action to ensure no further damage is inflicted upon the people of Wisconsin by the continued uncertainty and chaos being unnecessarily created by the Trump Administration,” the governor implored. “Please publicly call for the USDA to release this funding, and please do so today.”
Over the weekend, the Trump Administration sent correspondence suggesting Wisconsin should return FoodShare payments to the federal government [ [link removed] ]. The correspondence drew a strong rebuke yesterday from Gov. Evers, who responded: “No.”
Wisconsin and other states received the guidance after Gov. Evers and the Evers Administration led a coalition of states and governors last night in filing a new letter [ [link removed] ] before the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals asking the court to reject the Trump Administration’s last-ditch effort to yank SNAP payments from states across the country, including from nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites who on Friday were paid their November payments after the program previously ran out of funding November 1. The letter urged the court to enforce a directive requiring the Trump Administration to ensure federal resources are available to pay November SNAP payments for Wisconsin and other states across the country, as required by a recent court order. More details and background are available here [ [link removed] ].
After the letter was filed, states received correspondence from the Trump Administration suggesting states “must immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025.” A copy of the letter from the Trump Administration is available here [ [link removed] ].
Gov. Evers and the Evers Administration have also joined a coalition of states in requesting a Massachusetts court grant a temporary restraining order preventing the Trump Administration from enforcing the letter they sent to states on Saturday night. A copy of the filing is available here [ [link removed] ].
A copy of Gov. Evers’ letter to members of Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation is available here [ [link removed] ]. A transcript of the letter is available below.
"Dear Duly Elected Members of Congress:"
"I write to express the urgent need for you to take action today to call on the USDA to stop trying to take food out of the hands of nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, including about 270,000 kids, and blocking states’ access to November SNAP funding by refusing to release readily available federal resources to feed kids, families, and seniors that are going hungry now across Wisconsin and our country."
"As you may be aware, earlier this week, after a federal court directed the Trump Administration to release full November SNAP payment funding to states due to the program running out of funding on November 1, my administration worked quickly to get payments out to more than 330,000 Wisconsin households that depend on FoodShare for basic food and groceries. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services issued a total of $104,416,432.13 for 337,137 Wisconsin households on Thursday, November 6. The next day, Wisconsin FoodShare recipients spent nearly $10 million ($9.9 million) buying food and groceries."
"It was not until the following morning, on November 7, after the payments to Wisconsin FoodShare members were made and available to be spent, that the Trump Administration decided to file a motion asking an appeals court to pause the federal court’s directive forcing the administration to fully fund November SNAP payments. The Trump Administration also sent a letter that day to states indicating that they were working to fully implement the directive to release full November SNAP payments by the end of the day, only to file an emergency request with the U.S. Supreme Court late Friday night asking the nation’s highest court to put the directive on hold."
"Since that time, the Trump Administration has also asked all states to “undo” their distribution of funds and take food away from hungry kids, families, and seniors. Here in Wisconsin, we will do no such thing. This is a shocking and disturbing request—and one that should be condemned by every person, regardless of their political beliefs or party. As elected officials, we have an obligation to speak up for and protect and defend the people we serve. I am grateful for U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Mark Pocan, and Rep. Gwen Moore, who already are. I find it deeply troubling the rest of you have failed to do so, and I implore you to change that today."
"The solution to these problems is simple – utilize readily available federal funding to ensure all states have access to their full SNAP benefits now. This deserves your immediate attention and action to ensure no further damage is inflicted upon the people of Wisconsin by the continued uncertainty and chaos being unnecessarily created by the Trump Administration. Please publicly call for the USDA to release this funding, and please do so today."
"While my administration and other states continue to actively fight in court against the Trump Administration’s efforts to deprive Americans of food assistance, as Governor of the great state of Wisconsin, I plead to each of you, as members of the U.S. Congress, to assist us in this effort by calling on USDA to immediately make full November benefits available to all states and ensure that Wisconsin families and grocers continue to have access to these critical funds."
"Yours in service,"
"Tony Evers"
"Governor"
