Hi John!
It's only been a short time since our last newsletter, but it's been an exciting few weeks for socialists, both locally and across the country! Alongside Zohran Mamdani's resounding victory in the NYC mayoral race, showcasing an increasing appetite for socialist policies, California voters decisively passed Proposition 50 statewide and Measure A in Santa Clara County. Both of these ballot measures were democratically endorsed by our organization, and were targets of our recent high-turnout phonebanking and canvassing efforts -- thanks and kudos to the Electoral Working Group and all SV DSA members who contributed to moving the needle!

Our local work continues: the International Solidarity Working Group has been busy with multiple ongoing canvassing and flyering campaigns, both for No Appetite for Apartheid and the Rapid Response Network. The Community Safety Working Group has started submitting public records requests to learn about how Flock license plate readers may be impacting our communities. Last but not least, the Mutual Aid Working Group has continued hosting the monthly San Jose Free Store and held the Sharing What We Have Event to distribute food alongside Apóyate South Bay on 11/8.
On the agenda for this month's Chapter Meeting, we'll debrief election day and discuss our strategy for future campaigns going forward. You'll also be able to hear more detailed updates from each working group, a recap of our progress through the 2025-26 Strategic Plan, and details about an upcoming holiday party! The full agenda is linked here. You can join us on November 15, from 1-3 PM, either in person at SEIU Local 521 Union Hall or remotely via Zoom. This will be our last chapter meeting of the year, so we hope to see you there!
In Solidarity,
SV DSA

To build on the momentum from the practice picket Labor Working Group attended last month, join Starbucks workers on November 13 in Santa Cruz for a rally to get a fair contract! Check the #wg-labor channel in the SV DSA Slack to organize carpools and work towards winning a contract. This event kicks off a wave of Starbucks strikes. No contract, no coffee!

Support San José Tenants at a Code Enforcement Hearing!
|
There’s an ongoing tenant organizing campaign at Summerwind Apartments in East San José. Residents, trapped in terrible living conditions, formed a tenant union, the Summerwind Tenant Association. Despite a deadline to improve conditions, the landlord still hasn't made repairs, and Code Enforcement hasn't issued any fines. Tenants are asking for community support, especially from DSA, to show solidarity, fill the room, and amplify their voices. Join us on Thursday, November 13 at 6:30 PM at San José City Hall (200 E Santa Clara St), as we stand in solidarity with the tenants and demand the city hear their demands.

Update: Santa Clara County Divestment Action!
|
On November 6, the International Solidarity Working Group, along with our coalition members San Jose Against War, Vigil4Gaza, CAIR California, and De Anza SJP, spoke out at the Santa Clara County Finance and Government Operations Committee to call for divestment from corporations complicit in the genocide in Palestine! Until August 2025, our county had tens of millions invested in Chevron, a fossil fuel company which has directly profited off both environmental destruction and the genocide of Palestinians.
After our public comments, the committee passed a motion to forward a recommendation from the Sustainability Commission to divest from fossil fuels to the Board of Supervisors! Now, our coalition is gearing up to turn out to the Treasury Oversight Committee and then the full Board of Supervisors to continue to push both for this recommendation and for stronger language mandating divestment from all companies involved in grave human rights violations. If you're interested in getting involved in this campaign, join our International Solidarity Working Group!

Update: Social Committee is Ramping Up!
|
Over the past month, our Social Committee held several successful events, including a walking tour of downtown San Jose (which ended with an open mic at Peanuts Cafe, a worker owned co-op!), an election night watch party on 11/4, and a celebratory social on 11/7 that had a turnout of over 35 people! Keep an eye on our calendar to catch the next social on the evening of Friday, 11/21.
