Puppy mills like the one Joey lived in abuse and neglect animals to maximize profits. Dogs are often crammed in wire cages and stacked on top of each other — with urine and feces from the dogs above dripping onto the dogs below, causing skin burns and even blindness.
There’s no affection or playtime, no grooming, and little to no veterinary care. The dogs often have fur mats and visible wounds — abscesses, tumors, and cut paws from being forced to stand on wire floors.
