For all the chaos and petty drama Trump and his Republican enablers cause, we cannot lose sight of the real and serious implications of their administration.
Here’s just one example:
This past spring, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services decided to re-measure the distance between rural hospitals to see if they could cut off funding to some of them. If one critical access hospital is less than 35 miles from another, it can lose its designation and lose millions in federal funding.
As it turned out, there are a number of such hospitals in the country, and now the federal government is cutting them off. Even for hospitals that are 33 miles away, instead of the required 35.
That is devastating and potentially life-threatening for residents of these rural counties across the country, since it likely means that most of these hospitals will close.
With this news, plus the higher health care premiums caused by the Republican shutdown, and the massive cuts to Medicaid that will go into effect in a year, health care access will be lost for millions of Americans.
These are the stakes. Beyond the demolition of the East Wing, the petty feuds on Truth Social, the endless scandals — people's lives and abilities to take care of their families are on the line.
