Hi John,
Our last too close to call race has been called so we can close our 2025 elections, which provided much needed hope in these very difficult times.
Two of our endorsed candidates, Marisa Sweeney and Mark Downey, flipped their districts. Marisa Sweeney won her race for the New Jersey legislature as an open agnostic atheist by just a few hundred votes - this is the first time a Democrat will hold this seat since 1977. Mark Downey, who doesn't identify with any religious denomination, won a very close race for the Virginia legislature. This was his third effort to flip
this Republican held seat and we endorsed him for each attempt. We applaud him for his persistence and determination, or as he says, "third time's the charm."
Other victories for members of our community include, Paloma Aguirre for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Harvey Epstein for the New York City Council, and Erica Deuso for Mayor of Downington Pennsylvania. With her win, Erica Deuso made history as Pennsylvania's first openly transgender mayor and first openly atheist mayor.
We also had wins by religious allies who sought out our endorsement because they recognize the humanist and atheist community as an important constituency including Ghazala Hashmi who won for Virginia Lieutenant Governor.
Your active participation in the Center for Freethought Equality and in the electoral arena will help make America safer, saner, and more secular!
Sincerely,
Ron Millar
