The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a vital resource for millions of Americans. Right here in Washington State, almost 900,000 people rely on these benefits to help put food on the table. And under the Republican government, those benefits are being wiped away without a care.

FIRST: Republicans took a hammer to SNAP benefits in their Big, Ugly Bill–pushing for states to receive less money for these benefits and leaving Americans worried about how they will find the resources to feed their families.

THEN: Republicans caused a government shutdown that halted spending on almost all government programs. SNAP benefits ran out on November 1, despite Democrats’ calls for Republicans to put the House back in session and find a solution to keep our government open and vital resources like SNAP fully funded.

NOW: The courts are directing Republicans to find money to fund SNAP immediately. Donald Trump told them he’d “maybe” pay out half of all SNAP benefits needed this month, and then turned right around and said he might just not pay anything despite being told to.

john—Americans rely on SNAP for a number of reasons, each one important and justified. The program is there to ensure no American goes hungry, that no family has to choose between rent or putting food on the table, and that elderly Americans and those with disabilities can live on their own and still lead healthy lives.

But Republicans are using SNAP as a political pawn, making sure Americans feel as hurt as possible during this government shutdown, for frankly no good reason.

Democrats are fighting for real solutions, and are calling on Republicans to get back to work in Congress so they can put an end to this shutdown once and for all. But we need Republicans to hear your voice loud and clear, too.
