Republicans are looking for a way out of their shutdown, and they want Democrats to bail them out with a deal of vague promises.

The truth is that it’s not a deal or a compromise. It’s a a surrender that would result in millions of people losing their health care. I didn’t want any part of it, and Tuesday’s elections proved the American people don’t either.

The momentum has stalled on those talks, and Senate Democrats broadly have stiffened their spine.

There were two clear messages on Tuesday. It was a referendum on Trump's corruption, cruelty, and chaos.

But it's also not a coincidence these big wins came at the exact moment when Democrats are using our power to stand for something and be strong.

It’s a huge risk to ignore what the American people are telling us.

Americans want us to keep fighting for people’s health care and our democracy. Americans don’t want us to vote for a spending bill that throws millions off their health care.

I want the shutdown to end. We all do. But the one story that matters is Republicans have refused to meaningfully negotiate. They have known from the start that they need Democratic votes, and their refusal is why the government is shut down.

It’s the wrong time to give up the fight.

So please know, I will continue to do everything I can to lead on this fight — to keep our caucus together and strong while we demand Republicans come to the table.

We need you to keep doing your part as well. Keep up the pressure that there will be a price to pay for raising health care costs and throwing millions of Americans off their insurance.
