Justice Democrat Rep. Summer Lee talked about the state of the Democratic
Party and how the left can build power against the corporate machine with
Hasan Piker for more than two hours on his livestream in Washington, DC.
this week.

The two covered a lot of ground, including how Summer defeated AIPAC in
order to win her congressional seat for the first time in 2022. When asked
how she broke through their noise, Summer said:

“I’ve always been very fortunate to have people who support me… My first
election, AIPAC came at us. That was the first election that AIPAC even
existed as a PAC. We were 27 points up. They came in the last 3 weeks
[spending] $1 million a week. But we had friends. Justice Democrats, they
came in from the beginning.”

Summer is right. Thanks to people like you all over the country pitching
in $5 or $10 here and there, we generated grassroots resources to help her
take on AIPAC and its super PAC (United Democracy Project) and win —
despite being massively outspent.

Summer and Hasan also made this important point: When AIPAC dumps money
into opposing a progressive candidate running for Congress, they never
talk about Israel, because they know they wouldn’t win if they did.

AIPAC and its corporate donors don’t want anyone threatening the billions
of dollars in taxpayer funding that the Israeli military gets to commit
genocide and maintain its apartheid state.

That’s why they tried stopping Summer, why they broke records spending $30
million against Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, and why they’re going to use
their war chest again to try and halt our progressive movement in 2026.

We can’t let them succeed. Just like in previous elections, we need to
build a groundswell of grassroots support to protect progressive
incumbents like Summer while expanding our bloc by winning Democratic
primaries against out-of-touch, corporate Democrats.
