Dear MoveOn member,
For years, voters believed that, despite all of Donald Trump’s chaos and controversies, he’d still do a good job with the economy. That belief won him a second term.
Now, reality has set in. On Tuesday, Democrats in statewide races ran on affordability—and trounced their opposition.1 Voters shifted toward Democrats in 99.8% of counties that held partisan elections.2
Trump's economic approval has cratered across every major poll. His tariffs are spiking prices. His mass deportations are disrupting businesses and supply chains. And millions of Affordable Care Act enrollees just learned that they'll face premium increases—in some cases hundreds of dollars per month—starting January 1 because Trump refuses to extend health care subsidies.
Voters are furious. And Trump knows it.
Here's what he's counting on: that the chaos will overwhelm us. That we'll tune out, give up, or turn away. Because crises and emergencies don't just happen under Trump—they're his strategy. When we're exhausted and disoriented, he consolidates power.
Look at what's happening right now: He's allowing millions of families to go hungry by refusing to fund SNAP during the government shutdown, even though Congress set aside money for it and courts ordered him to do it. He tripled the budget for ICE, unleashing masked agents to conduct violent raids in our communities. He's criminally prosecuting political opponents. He's launched a "war" on Venezuela.
In every sphere of our lives, he's ramping up the stress. And we should expect more.
So how do we fight back?
Not by tuning out—that's exactly what he wants.
Not by pretending it doesn't matter—because it does.
And certainly not by falling into despair—that's how he wins.
We fight back by getting stronger. More organized. More strategic.
We show up in record numbers—like we did on the historic October 18 No Kings day of protest, and as we will in even larger numbers next time.
We call our members of Congress. We protect vulnerable people in our communities. We organize relentlessly for the midterms.
And we support the organizations that provide the backbone to our movement, starting with MoveOn.
MoveOn is the largest progressive organization in the nation, with members in every corner of the country. They provide the infrastructure our movement needs—coordinating protests, building our mass movement, and recruiting and supporting a new generation of young, dynamic, multiracial candidates who connect authentically with voters and will fight to end Trump's tyranny and build a better future for all of us.

Trump's falling poll numbers prove something crucial: This isn't inevitable. We can turn the tide. Even voters who supported Trump are turning against his economic chaos.3 Americans are rejecting this madness—as we saw so clearly in Tuesday’s elections.
To sustain this fight, we need to pace ourselves. We need to stay informed without drowning in every headline. We need to take breaks, celebrate wins (Zohran Mamdani! California Prop 50! New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, Maine, Pennsylvania!), and have faith in each other.
And we need to support the organizations doing the daily work of turning our resistance into political power. MoveOn is organizing and growing our movement in every part of the country right now, while also preparing for the largest midterm mobilization in history.
We need MoveOn now more than ever. Will you join us by donating $9 to MoveOn now? (If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.)
This chaos will not last. Together, we will end Trump's tyranny and build a future worthy of our ideals.
Thanks for all you do.
–Robert Reich
