Dear friend,

Violence has escalated in Gaza, killing more than 104 Palestinians since

Melissa has devastated lives in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican
Republic.

Humanitarian crises are rapidly compounding across the globe, and Mercy
Corps is responding. Our teams are on the ground meeting the urgent needs

Gaza

The October 10 ceasefire announcement was supposed to be a moment of
reprieve — one that put a pause to the fighting, allowed families to
return home, and paved the way for peace. But just 19 days after the
ceasefire deal was struck, violence broke out again.

Less than two weeks ago, a wave of Israeli airstrikes struck homes,
schools, and residential blocks in Gaza, killing at least 104 people and
injuring more than 250 others. The lives of innocent civilians in Gaza
hang in the balance as they seek peace, food, and medical care.

Mercy Corps remains on the ground to reach families with desperately
needed lifesaving aid. Through our water trucking, we’re supplying clean
water to families, promoting hygiene, and rehabilitating basic water and
sanitation systems. We’re also prepositioning critical food kits, hygiene
kits, and winterized shelter kits in Jordan and Egypt to quickly
distribute once aid corridors reopen.

The Caribbean

Last week, a tropical storm quickly strengthened into a Category 5
hurricane and ravaged through island nations in the Caribbean, including
Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

Up to 20 inches of rain and 185 mph winds brought heaving flooding and
complete destruction to many communities. In Haiti, at least 20 people
have died, while in Jamaica, more than 77% of the population was left
without power.

The hurricane also wreaked havoc in the Bahamas and Cuba.

Mercy Corps is on the ground delivering life-saving and life-sustaining
aid. Across the Caribbean, our teams have implemented Resilience Hubs to
ensure families have shelter, food, and resources amidst disaster. In
Haiti, we have reached more than 40,000 people with disaster preparedness
training and helped more than 7,000 farmers with climate techniques. With
the risk of disease outbreaks like cholera rising after the hurricane, we
are also distributing water purification tablets and hygiene kits to
prevent an urgent health emergency.

The impact of Hurricane Melissa is still compounding as more families lose
their homes, belongings, and livelihoods. Urgent help is desperately
needed.
