“Kansas is the latest example that public pressure can work to defeat gerrymandering.”
— Marina Jenkins, Executive Director of the NDRC
Team,
Kansas Republicans are abandoning efforts to force a special session to gerrymander ahead of the midterms.
This is a clear signal that fighting back works.
This is the latest setback to Trump’s gerrymandering scheme, and it’s fitting that this news broke the same day California voters overwhelmingly approved their state’s effort to punch back against these mid-decade redraws.
When Kansas Republicans first started down the path of trying to manipulate its congressional map to eliminate Kansas’s only Democratic congressional seat, we took action. The fair maps movement helped Kansans organize to contact their representatives to make sure lawmakers know their constituents deeply oppose a gerrymander.
The result? Kansas Republicans have — at least for now — thrown in the towel in the face of incredible pressure from the people. It’s a testament to what’s possible when we come together and fight back.
It should make other Republicans across the country pause. As our executive director, Marina Jenkins, put it:
“By raising their voices, Kansans have made Republicans think twice before drawing another extreme gerrymander and fended off a special session on redistricting. This highlights the fact that Republicans do not have to participate in this manufactured gerrymandering crisis; in fact, they can stop this crisis from continuing — as long as they stand up for their own constituents instead of blindly following orders from Washington.”
This fight is far from over. Kansas could revisit this gerrymandering plan in the months ahead — and, as we write this, several other Republican-led states are already in the process of attempting a mid-decade redraw.
