John,

Hundreds of flights are already being canceled around the country daily as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has begun rolling out its plan to slash flights involving at least 40 airports.[1]

These cuts are expected to affect some of our nation's busiest airports including in Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York City, leaving many travelers uncertain and anxious about upcoming plans.[2]

If you have any air travel coming up, here's how you can prepare.

Two flights double your chances that you'll run into a problem -- so now more than ever, avoid connecting flights if possible.

Try to book the first flight of the day, and avoid evening flights if at all possible. If it's important for you to arrive on time, we'd suggest even traveling the day before.

Booking through a third-party website -- rather than buying a ticket directly from an airline -- can make it more difficult to reschedule or get a refund if something happens to your flight.

Download and check the airline's app for notifications regularly, and make sure your contact information is up to date. If your flight does get canceled, the airline could offer you another flight, and you may need to respond quickly before seats are snatched up.

Put trackers in your bags in case your flight gets canceled or switched. We'd even recommend putting trackers in your carry-on bags, as you could be asked to gate-check them if overhead storage is full.

Having a backup plan could mean buying a ticket with a different carrier that is refundable, or that could be canceled for flight credit if you don't end up needing it. Or you could opt to drive, take a bus or train, or simply not travel at all.

The most important thing to remember is to stay alert and flexible. The more closely you monitor your flight -- and the more quickly you adapt if any changes do arise -- the better your chances of being able to reorient your plans.

Air travel always comes with some amount of uncertainty. Keep these tips in mind anytime you book a flight to help you get where you need to go. And check out our resource on airline travel for more tips and to learn about your rights as a passenger.
