We’re entering the second month of the government shutdown, and millions of Americans are still waiting for the food assistance they rely on.

The Trump administration is playing petty political games with people’s ability to feed themselves and refusing to properly fund SNAP.

That means families are opening empty cupboards. Parents are skipping meals so their kids can eat. Seniors are deciding between paying for medicine or buying groceries. And every day that passes without action, more families fall deeper into crisis.

The money to fund SNAP is sitting there, ready to help families put food on the table. But instead of following the law and doing what’s right, Trump and national Republicans are stalling — holding up the aid that millions of Americans count on just to get by.

Here in New Mexico, the state has stepped up to temporarily cover SNAP benefits so families can keep eating, but we don’t know how long that can last. Across the country, other states are running out of options — and families are running out of time.

No child in New Mexico, or anywhere in America, should ever go to bed hungry because politicians are playing games with their next meal.
