The affordability crisis in America is reaching its breaking point. The price of food has skyrocketed 29% since 2020, and rising health care costs are pushing many people to go without insurance.1
On top of enacting the largest cuts to health care and food assistance in history, Congress hasn’t extended the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, causing insurance premiums to more than double for tens of millions of people, and even triple in some cases. This isn’t sustainable, and it isn't acceptable in the wealthiest country on Earth.
After brutal election defeats to the President’s party this week, Trump finally claims he’s going to focus on affordability. But for nearly 10 months his policies have prioritized tax breaks for billionaires and corporations over uplifting working families and vulnerable communities. In fact, this week, he threatened to withhold SNAP benefits entirely until after the government shutdown is resolved, and his administration is appealing a judge’s ruling that it must release full SNAP funds to states now.2 The good news: advocate pressure and judicial oversight has forced the administration to start the process of issuing full November SNAP benefits while they appeal court orders.3
We’ve sent tens of thousands of messages to Congress, Governors, and the administration demanding the release of full SNAP benefits. And, this week, we also collected stories from impacted people who are seeing their health insurance premiums more than double next year.4
The American people deserve a government that puts their needs first. Instead we’re seeing an administration that’s using vulnerable people as pawns in their political games.

Right now, 1 in 5 U.S. dollars is spent on health care.5 But that’s about to get a whole lot worse.
ABC News recently spoke with people across the country who receive their health insurance through the ACA Marketplace. According to the report, Stacy Cox, a photographer in Utah, will see her and her husband’s health insurance premium increase by 300% next year—from $495.32 per month to $2,168.68 per month.6
As Stacy told ABC News:
"Just that bill right there, that's more than our mortgage, our insurance, most of our food. That's what we're paying per month to live. We can't afford to double what it costs for us to live just to have health insurance."
Not extending the enhanced ACA premium tax credits will only continue to drive up health costs and guarantee that uninsured rates will rise as millions choose to go without health insurance as opposed to paying astronomical monthly fees. It’s critical that Congress hears our voices and comes together to end the affordability crisis before it’s too late.
