Republicans must learn to win elections if we’re going to save our country. Find out how we do that below.
The Wakeup Call for Conservatives
Republicans were wholly unprepared to take on the left’s election machine, and as a result, Tuesday brought decisive defeats in Virginia, New Jersey, and California. On top of that, we got the confirmation that rational Americans had been dreading for months — the next mayor of New York City will be communist Zohran Mamdani.
President Trump is the best campaigner in a generation and having his name on the ballot has been a boost for Republicans. But if conservatives want to win in a post-Trump election landscape, we have to catch up.
Here’s how we do that:
1.) We must build out a political infrastructure to rival the left’s.
In Virginia alone, Republicans were outspent by about $40 million — much of which came from out of state. This was facilitated largely thanks to the left’s army of political operatives and organizations across the country. But it’s more than just fundraising. These groups work around the clock to staff campaigns, provide legal cover for candidates, build coalitions to support candidates, and do anything else that the campaign requires. They are the Walmart for Democrat campaigns. Republicans have these institutions too, but they are not yet able to rival the Democratic machine.
2.) We need to understand it’s 2025, not 2004.
Democrats have complex networks of activists and political operatives that are well equipped to win elections in the digital age. The Trump campaign recognized the value of a strong online presence, but the rest of the party is woefully behind. Communication with voters is no longer dominated by traditional TV ads. For every voter reached by a Republican TV ad, the left engages dozens more across a variety of social media platforms. We must develop a digital presence to compete online.
3.) We have to get boots on the ground, everywhere.
The old-fashioned “get out the vote” practices are still critical. That means door knocking, phone banking, and even ballot chasing where it can be done. Groups like Turning Point Action have helped conservative candidates in this regard, but they can’t do it alone. Heritage Action will be making a concerted effort to support conservative candidates on the ground in key states.
4.) We must show how conservative solutions meet the challenges voters are facing.
Sometimes we just need stronger candidates on the ballot. But, even with the strongest candidates, traditional GOP messaging can fail to connect with voters. The fact of the matter is that the promise of perpetual GDP growth isn’t a good campaign slogan anymore. While it might motivate voters with a stake in the stock market, it means very little to anyone else. Americans are having their jobs taken by foreigners on H-1B visas and our children are facing an uncertain future where they don’t believe they’ll ever be able to afford a home or start a family of their own. Meanwhile, the Democrats are gaining ground every day by enticing younger voters with the poisoned apple that is socialism. We can and must offer more to voters.
Now what?
It’s now or never for the Republican Party — with the 2026 midterms coming up, Democrats have the momentum. If they win back control of Congress, their first order of business will be to impeach President Trump and then undo all the progress we have made so far.
Republicans must put in the legwork to compete with the left. Rest assured that Heritage Action is committed to bringing about the changes needed to level the playing field for conservatives.

The Shutdown Drags On
The Democrats are keeping the government shutdown. We are up to 15 votes on a clean funding bill, all of which failed to reach the 60-vote threshold. There was talk of movement on government funding, but following the elections on Tuesday, the left feels emboldened and has decided to demand even more lunacy.
Democrat Senators continue to prolong the government shutdown so they can use the suffering of Americans as leverage in negotiations. Democrat Senators were threatened with primary challengers when they voted for a nearly identical bill back in March.
Because of this dynamic, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are just a middleman for negotiations. Republicans aren’t negotiating with Schumer — they’re negotiating with Bernie Sanders and AOC.

Speaking of Congress…
The government might not be open, but the Senate Judiciary Committee hasn’t missed a beat.
In one of the worst abuses of power in modern history, recently revealed documents show that Special Counsel Jack Smith colluded with the Biden DOJ and FBI to spy on their political enemies. This is a culmination of the hard work that the Senate Judiciary Committee has put in combing through records from the Biden administration.
The documents released by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) seem to confirm what many conservatives already knew but couldn’t directly prove — that the Biden administration weaponized law enforcement against conservatives. This could very well be the smoking gun.
The documents show that through “Arctic Frost” the Biden administration targeted 430 conservative groups and numerous key Republican figures. They also collected cellphone and social media data from close to a dozen Republican senators, White House employees, lawyers, and even President Donald Trump himself.
The entire operation was a scandalous and egregious overreach of federal power. Congress and the Trump administration must get to the bottom of this and hold everyone involved accountable.
Praying for Nigeria
Attacks on religious freedom more broadly are becoming all too common in the west. But elsewhere in the world the crisis is far more immediate. In Nigeria, Christians are regularly being slaughtered by Islamic terrorists <[link removed]>. Just this week another 17 faithful Christians were murdered for their faith — the total number is now in the thousands.
Religious freedom is foundational to American values and was one of the very reasons our nation came to be.
This is just one attack among many as the death toll of Christians continues to climb past the 7,000 mark in the country of Nigeria. These attacks, and much of the Christian death toll, are a result of ongoing persecution from Islamic terrorist groups in the country of Nigeria.
As a result, President Trump <[link removed]> has declared Nigeria a
“Country of Particular Concern” and has threatened to send US troops into the country if the government refuses to step in. We commend President Trump for taking this matter seriously, as well as Rep. Riley Moore (R-West Virginia) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for helping to elevate this matter.
