Good morning John

Tomorrow I will have the honour of joining His Majesty the King, senior members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and others at the Cenotaph in London for the National Service of Remembrance. Across Northern Ireland, in towns and villages large and small, people will gather to pause in silence to reflect, to give thanks, and to remember those who gave their lives in defence of our freedom.

Remembrance is one of the most significant moments in our national life. It reminds us that the liberty we enjoy today and often take for granted came at a heavy price paid by others. Men and women who stood against tyranny in two World Wars and in countless other conflicts. It also allows us to remember those closer to home who stood firm against terrorism, protecting our place in the United Kingdom whilst defending our neighbours.

I am always encouraged to see young people wearing their poppies with pride and learning about their meaning and why we wear them. I’ve had many conversations about this with my own son, Reuben. The passing on of remembrance is vital. When children understand why we stop, why we bow our heads, and why we say ‘We will remember them”, then the legacy of those who served will endure for generations to come.

This week at Stormont, together with other unionist representatives, we tabled a motion focused on ensuring that our veterans and their families are properly supported. Too often those who served face unacceptable and unnecessary barriers when they return to civilian life. The motion sought to strengthen the delivery of the Armed Forces Covenant here, making sure that no veteran or family member is disadvantaged when accessing healthcare, housing or education, and that their valuable skills and experience are recognised across our society. We welcome the support given by the majority of MLAs to the motion and will work tirelessly to ensure it is enacted.

Finally, I want to pay a heartfelt tribute to the Royal British Legion and to everyone involved in the Poppy Appeal. Through your dedication and generosity, remembrance is kept alive and the care for our veterans continues. Thank you for all you do.

Yours sincerely,

Rt. Hon. Gavin Robinson MP

DUP Leader
