This week, Nancy Pelosi announced she will not seek re-election. I wanted to take a moment to share with you what her leadership has meant to me, to California, and to our country.
In 2007, Nancy Pelosi became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. She broke a momentous glass ceiling and proved that women not only have a place in Congress, they should be running it. She built coalitions that passed landmark legislation like the Affordable Care Act, Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
She has been called the “most consequential Speaker in American history,” and I don’t know a single person in Washington, including Republicans, who disagree. You know you’re good at your job when even your opponents admit how effective you are.
I’ve also been lucky to know Nancy Pelosi as both a mentor and a friend. Each time I bring my daughters Karina and Lillian to the Floor to vote, the first person they run to is Nancy. You can’t make it up. She adores kids, and when you see her with them, it’s clear why she’s always said her work is “for the children.”
She has devoted her entire life to serving our country, and while I’m sad for myself and for the House, I couldn’t be happier for her and her family for this new chapter.
