Dear Friends,

Earlier this week, I announced that I will not be seeking re-election.

It seems prophetic now that the slogan of my very first campaign in 1987 was “A voice that will be heard.” And it was you who made those words come true. It was the faith that you had placed in me and the latitude that you had given me that enabled me to shatter the marble ceiling and be the first woman Speaker of the House whose voice would certainly be heard.

Because of your trust, I was able to represent San Francisco and our country around the world with patriotism and pride. The Affordable Care Act, Wall Street reform, human rights abroad, and so many other priorities all sprang from the vision, values and voices of San Franciscans, and were made possible by your support.

We can be proud of what we have accomplished, but there's always much more work to be done.

That work became a little easier this week with the resounding success of Democratic candidates across the country and the landslide victory of Proposition 50 here in California. With Prop 50, California is fighting back against Republicans’ attacks on our health care, communities and democracy, and we delivered a clear message that we will not back down in the face of tyranny. We didn’t agonize, we organized to draw the line and put working families on the map.

This success belongs to the thousands of volunteers. Governor Gavin Newsom said on our post-election Volunteer Thank You call last night that this was the largest grassroots volunteer campaign in our state’s history. Thank you to each and every one of you who joined our work with Working Families for Fair Elections as part of that initiative to turn out the vote for Prop 50 and turn the page on Republican cruelty and corruption.

None of this would have been possible without the tremendous leadership of the San Francisco Building & Construction Trades and the San Francisco Labor Council with support from the labor movement, including SEIU 1021, SEIU 2015, California Teachers Association, California Nurses Association, AFSCME Local 3299, SEIU Local 87, AFT 2121, California Faculty Association, IFPTE Local 21, United Educators of San Francisco, and Unite HERE Local 2.

I am particularly grateful to the organizations who partnered with Team Pelosi and Grassroots Democrats HQ to pass Prop 50. Statewide, that includes the Clean Water Center Action Fund, Grassroots Democrats HQ, Seed the Vote, and California Young Democrats. And we were joined by an incredible coalition to reach voters here in San Francisco, where we had the highest victory margin for Prop 50 anywhere in the state. For that, I want to thank the California Working Families Party, San Francisco Rising Action, Chinese Progressive Association Action Fund, Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club, San Francisco Young Democrats, San Francisco Women's Political Committee, Evolve CA and Bay Resistance.

With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service in Congress. As we go forward, my message is this: know your power.

Together, we have made history. We have made progress. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear. We are ready to keep working and will need your help back on the phones to Save Our Health Care. Be on the lookout for that information soon!

Until then, know that everything we have accomplished together has been possible only with your active participation and patriotism. And together, our work continues to save our democracy at the kitchen table.
