Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined [ [link removed] ] state, local, and federal authorities to discuss their ongoing partnership to reduce violent crime in Cleveland.

Announced in 2023 by Governor DeWine and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb [ [link removed] ], the partnership includes the Cleveland Division of Police (CPD), Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Investigative Unit, Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center, Ohio Adult Parole Authority, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, U.S. Marshals Service, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Department of Justice, and others.

Since July 2023, the violent crime reduction initiatives have led to more than 1,400 felony arrests in Cleveland for serious crimes such as homicide and felonious assault. Authorities have also seized more than 1,000 illegally possessed firearms. 

"These are data-driven, focused operations where we know the most violent offenders are committing the most crime in Cleveland," said Governor DeWine. "State, local, and federal officials are regularly surging into the areas where people are illegally carrying guns, firing them in the streets, and killing people."

Governor DeWine took part in the unveiling of a memorial sign, dedicating a portion of U.S. Route 33 in Auglaize County to Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. James A. Kirkendall, who was killed in the line of duty in 1970.

Governor DeWine issued [ [link removed] ] the following statement on the death of Former Vice President Dick Cheney:

"Fran and I were saddened to learn this morning of the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney.  

"I first got to know him when we were members of Congress together and he was in the House Republican leadership.   He was thoughtful, steady, and an advocate for his beloved Wyoming.   

"Our nation got to see his leadership up close when he served as U.S. Secretary of Defense and directed our military strategy in Operation Desert Storm.

"Vice President Cheney served his country faithfully in every office he held.    He will be missed.

"Fran and I send our condolences to his wife, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and to his grandchildren."

“Ellen and I extend our prayers and condolences to the Cheney family during this time.”

Flag Lowering Order of Former Vice President Dick Cheney [ [link removed] ]

In honor of the life and service of former Vice President Cheney, Governor DeWine ordered [ [link removed] ] the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the State of Ohio, and to remain until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Violent Crime Reduction Initiative Graphic [ [link removed] ]

As part of a violent crime reduction initiative [ [link removed] ] in Cincinnati on November 3, 2025, partnering law enforcement agencies arrested a 13-year-old after he fled from a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle. This arrest was part of a sustained multi-agency operation [ [link removed] ] focused on reducing violent crime in Cincinnati.

The preliminary results of the violent crime reduction initiative include four felony arrests, one illegally possessed firearm seizure, two drug seizures, and two stolen vehicles recoveries.

“These operations are part of a unified, statewide push by trained officers to take violent criminals and illegal firearms off our streets,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Incidents like this clearly demonstrate the importance of our ongoing partnerships and our commitment to holding criminals accountable.”

Governor DeWine took part in a ribbon-cutting [ [link removed] ] ceremony to celebrate the opening of Eastland-Fairfield Career and Technical Schools’ new NextGen Training Center.

Located on the campus of Fairfield Career Center, the 34,000-square-foot facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment and the latest career-focused programming, providing more students across central Ohio the knowledge and skills they need to jumpstart successful careers.

“The NextGen Training Center will help hundreds more students discover new interests, practice new skills, and explore opportunities they can take with them for the rest of their lives,” said Governor DeWine. “As we continue to invest in career technical education, we’re helping Ohio students find subjects they’re passionate about and that inspire them to reach their full potential.”

* House Bill 44 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by State Representative Joseph A. Miller III (D-Amherst) and State Representative Kevin D. Miller (R-Newark), regarding training schools for prospective law enforcement officers, filling a vacant police department position without a competitive examination, requirements for chief of police training, and advanced training for officers at or above the rank of sergeant.
* House Bill 171 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by State Representative Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland), to enact section 5534.673 of the Revised Code to designate a portion of State Route 28 in Clermont County as the "CPT Louis John Speidel Memorial Highway."

Governor DeWine welcomed [ [link removed] ] 20 Ohioans as the newest members of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. These individuals were honored during an induction ceremony Thursday in recognition of their outstanding post-military accomplishments.

"As we prepare to observe Veterans Day on Tuesday, we are honored to recognize the extraordinary individuals who make up the 2025 class of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame," said Governor DeWine. "Thank you to the inductees who returned home from service to our country and continued to serve through volunteerism and leadership, being advocates and mentors, sharing their experiences and knowledge, and offering encouragement to others. We are proud of them and of their accomplishments."

Governor and First Lady DeWine celebrating the opening of Scioto Valley School District's new school-based health clinic. [ [link removed] ]

Governor DeWine visited [ [link removed] ] Piketon Jr/Sr High School to celebrate the grand opening of the Scioto Valley School District's new school-based health clinic.

The health clinic was built with nearly $1.7 million in grant funding awarded as part of Governor DeWine's Appalachian Children's Health Initiative [ [link removed] ]. Through a partnership with Valley View Health Centers, the new primary-care clinic will serve school students, staff, and their families, as well as the broader community. Behavioral health services are also offered.

School-based healthcare has been shown to significantly reduce barriers to accessing essential health services, leading to improved physical, behavioral, and academic outcomes for students.

“This new clinic will allow students to get the care they need and get back to learning,” said Governor DeWine. “When families can access care where their children already learn, we see better attendance, higher classroom performance, and healthier, more confident students who can reach their God-given potential."

Violent Crime Reduction Initiative Cleveland [ [link removed] ]

As part of a violent crime reduction initiative [ [link removed] ] in Cleveland on November 6, 2025, partnering agencies seized eight illegally possessed firearms and made a total of 10 felony arrests, including a man who fled from a traffic stop with two young children in the vehicle.

The agencies involved in yesterday’s initiative include the Cleveland Division of Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Investigative Unit, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, United States Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and United States Department of Justice.
