Washington, D.C. has a population of over 700,000 people -- more than some states! And yet, because D.C. is not a state, its residents are denied the right to equal representation in Congress.

I'm proud to say that last month the House took action to end this injustice by passing legislation making Washington, D.C. the 51st state!

As the House debated this historic legislation, I said "If the Republicans say this isn't about race, you can be sure it's about race." Over 60% of D.C. residents identify as people of color. The sad truth is that the disregard for these American's rights goes hand in hand with the disenfranchisement of minority voters around the country.

Right now, our nation is in a much-needed moment of reckoning. Among so many other long overdue changes we're making, we must acknowledge that it's long past time these taxpaying Americans receive the full benefits of federal representation.
