Email from Rep. Salazar Reporting from Washington, D.C. FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 119, Issue #19 Dear Friends / Estimados Amigos, The government shutdown has lasted more than a month, and Miami families continue to feel the impact, from flight delays and grounded routes to food assistance and healthcare programs now at risk. My focus is clear: protecting our community and ensuring every family in District 27 gets the support they need. Here’s what I’ve done: Voted to keep the government open. Co-sponsored bills to extend healthcare subsidies and keep SNAP food benefits running. Urged Senate Democrats to end the shutdown and protect WIC benefits. I’ll keep fighting to reopen the government and stay focused on what matters most: affordable healthcare, lower housing costs, safe skies, real immigration reform, and freedom for all. My offices remain open and ready to help. Sincerely / Atentamente, María E. Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) How am I doing as your congresswoman? HONORING AND PROTECTING OUR SENIORS This week, I had a wonderful morning visiting the residents of Robert King Towers Comedor in my district. Our seniors are the heart and soul of Miami, the men and women who built this city and continue to shape it with their wisdom, resilience, and love for community. Meeting them is always a reminder of why I fight to expand affordable senior housing, strengthen Medicare, and ensure every elder in South Florida can live with dignity and peace of mind. Their legacy is Miami’s strength. DELIVERING LIFESAVING FUNDING FOR MIAMI’S CHILDREN AND HOSPITALS I was honored to cut the ribbon at the new South Miami Psychology Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, a major step forward for families in our community. Thanks to the $1.45 million in federal funding I secured, Nicklaus Children’s can now expand its world-class mental health services for children and families right here in Florida’s 27th District. That’s federal funding delivered directly to South Florida, money from Washington brought home to ensure our families have access to life-saving care. Our children face new challenges every day, and this new center provides a safe place to heal, grow, and receive world-class care close to home. Our kids deserve nothing less. JOINING FLORIDA REPUBLICANS URGING THE SENATE TO END THE SHUTDOWN I joined Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-16), Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and members of the Florida Republican delegation in sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), urging them to pass the House-passed clean continuing resolution and end the ongoing Democrat-led shutdown that is hurting families across Florida. Families in Miami and across the country are paying the price for Washington’s dysfunction. House Republicans have already voted to keep the government open, protect food assistance for millions, and ensure our service members and federal workers are paid. The Senate must do its job. It’s time for Democrats to stop playing politics with people’s lives. Read the full letter here. IN THE MEDIA: SPEAKING UP FOR SOUTH FLORIDA While in the district this week, I joined several national and local media outlets, including NBC News, Univision, Juan Manuel Cao, Newsmax, and others to discuss the ongoing government shutdown, the current immigration crisis, and the struggle for freedom in Cuba and Venezuela, among other key issues impacting Florida’s 27th District. This Sunday, I’ll appear on Univision’s Al Punto Florida. I hope you’ll tune in! You can watch my full interview with Juan Manuel Cao here.
