The Green Revolution
Tuesday, 14 July 2020 at 6.00pm
Environmentalism has become almost apocalyptic. We are told how humanity is threatening our planet, destroying natural habitats and we are on the verge of all life on earth becoming extinct. One in five British children are having nightmares about climate change, according to a survey by pollster Savanta-ComRes for BBC Newsround.
This debate has become heavily partisan, with one side claiming moral superiority while the other is suspicious about real motivations. In the end, we all want to ensure the natural world is safeguarded.
In response to all the doom and gloom, a new green uprising is seeking to reclaim an optimistic, progressive environmentalism. An environmentalism that focuses on tackling climate change and protecting natural resources, not political revolution. An environmentalism that embraces private property rights, markets, and the price mechanism, as well as scientific solutions such as nuclear energy and GMOs.
To discuss this positive approach to environmental policy, we have assembled a top-notch panel.
Panellists:
- Matthew Lesh is the Head of Research at the Adam Smith Institute and authored the ‘Market Environmentalism: The Best Way to Protect Our Planet’ chapter in Green Market Revolution (Host).
- Zion Lights is the UK director of Environmental Progress and nuclear energy advocate, former spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion and author of ‘The Ultimate Guide to Green Parenting’.
- Christopher Barnard is the President and Founder of the British Conservation Alliance and editor of ‘Green Market Revolution: How Market Environmentalism Can Protect Nature and Save the World’
