National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week just wrapped up and it was a busy one for the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning!
We started the week by hosting more than 30 people at our office for Frontline Voices, a podcast listening event and panel with families impacted by lead poisoning. Participants learned about the dangers of lead poisoning, listened to an episode of a new podcast LEAD: How This Story Ends is Up to Us and made commitments to raise lead poisoning awareness in our community. Plus there were giveways, art and food! It was an impactful and moving evening.

Later in the week, CPLP reps presented in person and virtually on lead risk and lead poisoning prevention efforts in Monroe County. We even headed west to attend Buffalo & Erie Co Lead Safe Task Force's summit where advocates from across upstate NY coming together to learn, share best practices & data, and continue to collaborate to keep children safe from lead hazards.
The week ended with two tabling events including Halloween at the Market, one of the biggest tabling events of the year. We teamed up with our Causewave colleagues and handed out hundreds of packets with fruit snacks, lead poisoning prevention materials and one of a kind stickers.
2024 EBLL Numbers Show Continued Need for Prevention
Monroe County has just released ([link removed]) 2024's Elevated Blood Lead Levels and unfortunately they are up over 2023's. 299 children in our community were diagnosed with lead poisoning, negatively impacting their development. This week's news reminds us of the continued need for collaborative lead exposure reduction efforts in our community, because each child in Monroe County deserves a lead-safe future.
