General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Happy Friday!

This week, New Jersey chose Mikie Sherrill as our next Governor, and Senator Kim looks forward to partnering with her to make New Jersey more affordable for all. The fight to lower costs extends to Washington, where Senator Kim is working to reduce healthcare costs, fight back against corruption, and restore SNAP in what is now the longest government shutdown in American history. We continue to urge Republicans to come back to work and negotiate so we can all move forward.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR A VIRTUAL VETERANS’ TOWN HALL ON SATURDAY MORNING:

Our Veterans’ Town Hall, originally scheduled to be in-person, has now shifted to become a virtual event. We are looking forward to opening up this opportunity for more New Jerseyans to join the Senator and NJ veterans ahead of Veterans’ Day.

This isn’t one of our regular town halls; this is a chance for you to hear directly from New Jersey veterans about their service and ask them questions about their stories.

All are welcome and we hope you’ll join us to honor those who have served by lifting up their voices and celebrating their contributions to our country.

Working for New Jersey:

WORKING WITH GOVERNOR-ELECT SHERRILL TO BRING CHANGE AND PROGRESS TO THE GARDEN STATE:

On Tuesday, Senator Kim released a statement about the election results in the Governor’s race. Senator Kim is proud to have a partner in Governor-elect Sherrill. This is our moment to bring change and progress to the Garden State, and we look forward to working with the Governor-elect in the coming years to deliver it.

Senator Kim’s full statement:

“New Jersey is at a crossroads, and our neighbors are facing a lot of questions about their future. Will our state be one where people can afford to raise a family? Will our state be one where the rules only benefit the well-off and well-connected? Will it be one where parents can care for their children, and where grown children can care for aging parents? Will it be one where people with ideas and ambition can start a business and grow jobs? Will it be one where the innovations and inventions of the future are crafted? And will it be one where rights and freedoms are protected?

I’m proud to have a partner in Governor-elect Sherrill in answering those questions that will shape the future of our state. Together, and working with Senator Booker, our House colleagues and officials across New Jersey, I believe we can make our state more affordable, I believe we can make it more transparent, and I believe we can make it a hub for opportunity and innovation.

This is our moment to bring change and progress to the Garden State. I look forward to working with Governor-elect Sherrill in the coming years to deliver it.”

SHARING NEW JERSEYANS’ STORIES OF GIVING BACK:

Last week, we asked you how you’re giving back as neighbors struggle with SNAP benefits lapsing and rising healthcare costs. What we heard is truly inspiring.

People like Mary from Medford, who as a teacher, is personally doing check ins with her students to make sure their families have resources as New Jersey heads into winter while also organizing a Thanksgiving drive with her friends and family to collect winter items and food to donate to Camden.

Or Pamela from Rocky Hill who has taken it upon herself to purchase grocery store gift cards and sending them to AmeriCorps members across New Jersey who would otherwise rely on SNAP for monthly food costs.

Or Leslie from Stockton, who is donating to local food banks in her community and who says “I feel very fortunate that I can [donate food]. No one in this country should lack a roof over their head, heat in their home, medical care or nutritious food.”

Watch Senator Kim share your stories on the Senate floor.

We know that in tough times, New Jersey always shows up for one another. Now is the time to come together and give back to our communities.

If you will be volunteering or giving back to your local food bank or non-profit to help aid neighbors who are struggling with hunger and rising costs, we want to hear from you. Let us know what you’re doing and why, and we’ll share your stories to shine a light on the good that is happening amidst so much uncertainty and chaos.

If you are struggling with food insecurity in the government shutdown or know someone who is, please see this resource for how to get food this week in New Jersey.

Working for you at the Capitol:

WORKING TO END THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN:

Six weeks into the government shutdown and people want solutions – not images of Trump’s Halloween party or an empty House chamber.

People are missing paychecks, losing healthcare, and struggling to feed their families.

It’s time Republicans get back to Washington and do their jobs.

DEMANDING SNAP BE FULLY FUNDED:

SNAP is essential for over 40 million Americans. 1 in 8 people in this country rely on food assistance.

Despite this, Trump was just fine with them going hungry. The President should do everything in his power to make sure SNAP is fully, not just partially, funded.

HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF LOWERING HEALTHCARE COSTS:

Diane is a New Jersey resident whose healthcare is more than doubling.

Diane told our office:

“Our net premiums are increasing by $1,100 a month! Honestly, that's ridiculous! We have three people insured on this plan; myself, my husband and our college age daughter... I can't see us continuing to pay $12,500 a year plus an additional $13,200 a year to pay for a handful of doctor visits and yearly medical tests. Of course, we will have to hope none of us end up in the hospital for an extended illness...

“It's a fine line we walk to have enough income each week to pay for our expenses. We are essentially living from estimated paycheck to estimated paycheck.”

It's unacceptable that so many people are facing the hard decision about whether they can afford to keep their healthcare, take their kids to the doctor when they're sick, or pay for a health emergency.
