Number of the Day: 34% of voters think it will be at least six months before they feel comfortable going out in public without a mask

July 13, 2020: Thirty-four percent (34%) of voters nationwide say it will be six months or longer before they feel safe going out in public without a mask. That total is up from 25% just over two months ago and includes 9% who say they will never feel safe without a mask.[1][2]

  • Forty-eight percent (48%) of Democrats say it will take at least six months, up twelve points from the earlier survey.

  • Thirty percent (30%) of independents say it will be at least six months, up ten points from May.

  • Nineteen percent (19%) of Republicans share those views, up four points in two months.[1]

At the other extreme, 37% are already comfortable without a mask or expect to be soon (within a month). That's down two points from the earlier survey. The decline is primarily driven by Republicans. In May, 58% of GOP voters were comfortable or expected to be soon. That's down to 51% now.[1]

From a different perspective, a majority (55%) of those in the May survey expected they would be comfortable going out with a mask by now.[2]
