Dear Neighbors, It’s now been over a month since the reckless government shutdown began, and still, millions of Americans are paying the price for Washington’s dysfunction. I’ve been working across the aisle to make sure essential programs keep serving the people who rely on them most. Unfortunately, Republicans, who control the White House, the Senate, and the House, continue to refuse meaningful negotiations to end the shutdown or restore critical Affordable Care Act subsidies. Their obstruction has left millions facing suspended federal services and uncertainty about food assistance, housing, and health care. Even after two federal courts ordered the Trump administration to restart food aid, it plans to issue only half of normal SNAP benefits—delayed for weeks as states reprogram their systems. Food banks across Illinois are doing heroic work to fill the gap, but they cannot replace a program that provides $8 billion in monthly nutrition assistance. I’m pressing the administration to restore full benefits immediately and end this senseless shutdown so families can afford food, housing, and care without fear.
