Nearly 42 million Americans and 650,000 Missourians rely on SNAP benefits, and right now, those benefits are hanging by a thread. Millions of families are at risk of going hungry because of government inaction.
I know what that feels like.
When my son was born premature at just 1 lb, 3 oz, food stamps helped us survive. He spent four months in the hospital. I stayed home for a year to care for him because his lungs were too weak for him to attend daycare. Having nutritious, readily available food through SNAP was a lifeline for my family.
John, my story is just one of millions. People are on food stamps for all sorts of reasons. In the richest country in the world, we should expect that everyone has enough to eat.
Instead, Trump and MAGA Republicans are cutting benefits and gutting the government one program after another to fund $200 million private jets for ICE agents and cut taxes for their billionaire donors. These are the SAME donors who came after us last time, and the same donors who supported our current Congressman.
On top of that, Trump’s pouring his energy into building a new ballroom in the White House, with donor money from the same ultra-wealthy crowd, while everyday Americans are left behind.
All the while, families in St. Louis are about to go hungry, and health care costs are skyrocketing.
