Dear Friend,

The eyes of the nation are on SNAP due to the government’s ongoing refusal to fully fund the program, which has long served as a vital source of support for individuals and families struggling with food insecurity. Despite recent court orders out of Massachusetts and Rhode Island demanding that the government abide by the law, the Trump administration has continued to demonstrate cruelty and callousness as tens of millions of SNAP recipients around the country face uncertainty over their benefits.

But even once the shutdown ends, there is no guarantee that funding for the program will return to normal. The administration has already signaled its desire to make significant cuts to SNAP and other public benefits. As such, much work remains to dismantle major illegal barriers to access to these life-saving food benefits for millions of people.

Well before the shutdown began, NCLEJ was leading this fight in states across the country, and we are actively working in Missouri, Alaska, Georgia, and New York to expand access to the food benefits low-income families and communities need to survive.

In Missouri, NCLEJ is defending our recent victory in a lawsuit against the Missouri Department of Social Services challenging the State’s dysfunctional administration of SNAP and demanding that eligible applicants receive their benefits in a timely fashion. Prior to our lawsuit, thousands of SNAP applications in Missouri were being denied solely because the State’s overloaded call center prevented applicants from getting through to complete their interview. This is simply unacceptable.

And yet, the Missouri DSS has appealed the decision. So we are fighting to keep these orders in place to compel the State of Missouri to fix their broken system and prevent thousands of already-vulnerable families from slipping into starvation.

NCLEJ has long been a national leader in SNAP litigation and advocacy. I urge you to support our efforts to dismantle illegal barriers to access in Missouri and other states around the nation by donating today. ([link removed])

Thank you,
