Today, I’m proud to share Just Fix It [ [link removed] ], a nonpartisan activation dedicated to safeguarding access to affordable healthcare and preventing crippling premium hikes for 24 million Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or state exchanges. This vital effort, backed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), Caring Across Generations, MomsRising, and other passionate advocacy groups, will mobilize millions to hold Congress and the White House accountable.
This past summer, a cruel decision by Congressional Republicans saw them refuse to renew crucial ACA funding, the very foundation that makes healthcare accessible to millions. While they were cutting lifelines for working families, billionaires received unnecessary new tax breaks. In September, instead of engaging in meaningful negotiations, they chose to furlough federal workers.
Republicans, who control the government, have argued that they cannot resolve this without investigations, negotiations and delays and ending their government shutdown. But that’s a distraction and untrue. They broke the system, and the answer is clear: just fix it.
Otherwise, a staggering 24 million Americans face the harsh reality of skyrocketing healthcare costs or the terrifying prospect of losing their coverage entirely. The ripple effect threatens the rest of the country with rising private insurance premiums. The expiration of ACA subsidies is set to tear apart lives, leading to 7.3 million Americans losing coverage, 4.8 million becoming uninsured, and a devastating 339,000 job losses.
The time for action is NOW. We must reach out to our elected officials, demanding they provide a solution to this problem—a problem they themselves created through partisan inaction.
What to Do
If you’ve received your ACA renewal notice, make a copy and share it online with the #JustFixIt and share it with your members of Congress — after covering or removing any personal or health information.
If you haven’t gotten your renewal notice yet, you can use the Kaiser Family Foundation calculator [ [link removed] ] to estimate how much your premiums will increase and take a screenshot of your results.
Congress may refuse to do their jobs, but we absolutely cannot allow them to ignore their responsibilities or point fingers. We elected them to serve America. And the truth is, healthcare is broken without these subsidies, which are essential to help our families make ends meet. What’s the answer to this crisis? JUST FIX IT.
