Day 38 of the Government Shutdown

Today marks thirty-eight days of the government shutdown, the longest shutdown in US History. I remain ready to work across the aisle with my Democrat colleagues on getting the government back open. However, Democrats are set on making the temporary COVID Obamacare premium tax credits permanent at an enormous more than a trillion dollars cost to taxpayers. According to the Congressional Budget Office, doing so would increase the federal deficit by $350 billion over ten years, plus another $60 billion in interest costs, bringing total new spending to nearly $500 billion. This not only would raise the cost of inflation but bailout a broken healthcare bill.

This extra cost is more than Congress spends on NASA and the EPA combined. Additionally, these expanded subsidies primarily benefit insurance companies and high-income individuals, allowing households earning up to $600,000 a year to qualify for taxpayer-funded assistance. Roughly one-third of the boosted subsidies go to people with incomes about 400% of the poverty level. I am all for lowering healthcare costs for Americans by passing sensible legislation and reform that helps those who are most in need, not individuals 400% above the federal poverty level. Until Democrats come to the table to open the government, we cannot negotiate improvements to healthcare.

As always, I am here to serve you. My offices are open through the shutdown to assist constituents. For answers to common questions, visit my Shutdown Guidance Page for updates and resources.

Chairman Roger Williams Visits Waco Small Business Owners

Congressman Sessions and Chairman Williams speak at a round table in Waco
This week, I had my good friend- Congressional Baseball Coach, fellow Texan, and House Small Business Chairman- Roger Williams with me in Waco for an event with small business owners from across Central Texas. Together, we discussed how House Republicans are making significant strides to cut red tape and pass landmark legislation like the One Big Beautiful Bill. Under this bill, small businesses benefit from a 20% deduction for qualified income, an increased deduction cap, expanded estate tax exemptions, and no tax on tips. I’m grateful to the countless Texans from across the district who joined us and helped make this a successful event.

Baylor Homecoming

This past weekend, my wife Karen and I had an amazing time at Baylor University’s Homecoming—especially celebrating the Bears’ big win! It was great to visit with President Linda Livingstone and see so many friends and members of the Baylor community. Homecoming at Baylor is a wonderful tradition that brings students, alumni, and families together to celebrate community. Sic ‘Em!

H.R. 3080Health Care Fairness for All Act
Throughout my time in Congress, I’ve been a champion for making high quality healthcare affordable for all Americans. As someone who represented Texas families while personally being on an Obamacare plan for seven years, I saw how the law’s flawed structure led to fewer providers, longer wait times, and skyrocketing deductibles. The truth is Obamacare has failed to live up to its promises, leaving too many Texans and Americans paying for coverage they cannot afford to use. While Democrats want to make the enhanced ACA subsidies permanent without addressing the underlying issues, Republicans are fighting for real reform that lowers costs and expands access for hardworking Texans. That’s why I introduced H.R. 3080, the Health Care Fairness for All Act, which ensures fairness by giving every American a flat tax credit to choose the plan that works best for them while keeping protections for pre-existing conditions and dependent coverage. This approach empowers Texas families, not Washington bureaucrats, by delivering better care, lower costs, and more choice without raising taxes or growing the deficit.
