Attorney General Nessel Secures Agreement with Texas Company Over Deceptive Mackinac Island Tickets Websites

*LANSING* – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reached an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC) with MTVRS, LLC, a Texas company, resolving allegations that it violated the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by operating websites that misled consumers into believing they were purchasing official tickets for popular Mackinac Island attractions. The agreement (PDF) [ [link removed] ], filed earlier this week, follows a cease-and-desist notice sent by the Department of Attorney General instructing MTVRS to take down or correct the alleged deceptive websites.

“Deceptive websites not only harm consumers but the legitimate businesses and agencies that preserve and promote our attractions,” Nessel said. “My office will continue to pursue companies that mislead tourists to ensure Michiganders and visitors can trust the sites they use to plan their vacations.”

One website operated by MTVRS, fortmackinactickets.com, allegedly mimicked the official website that sells Fort Mackinac tickets [ [link removed] ], which are sold by a governmental agency responsible for park preservation on mackinacparks.com. The MTVRS site reportedly used a misleading logo and charged marked-up prices.

A separate website operated by MTVRS, mackinacticketing.com, allegedly misled consumers looking to purchase ferry tickets to Mackinac Island by copying the schedule information and address for Shepler’s Ferry, creating the impression that tickets are being purchased directly from Shepler’s official website [ [link removed] ], sheplersferry.com. MTVRS reportedly charged an additional $7.95 fee before using the customer’s payment information to purchase tickets from Shepler’s official website.

Under the terms of the AVC, MTVRS must take down the websites advertising tickets to the Michigan tourist attractions and is prohibited from creating any new websites related to Michigan tourist attractions or ticketed events in the state. The company also cannot initiate or participate in any new sales with Michigan consumers for tickets being offered to tourist attractions in other states.

Michigan consumers who suspect consumer protection violations by other companies are encouraged to contact the Department of Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team at:
