Maryland families - and families throughout the country - are already grappling with rising costs from tariffs and inflation. But now, unless federal leaders act, one more aspect of life is getting more expensive next year: health insurance. That’s because the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance subsidies are set to expire at the end of this year.

These subsidies, known as enhanced premium tax credits, make health insurance affordable for people who purchase plans through the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange. Without them, premiums could increase by hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year for families, forcing many to drop their coverage, skip doctor visits, and delay preventive care, putting both individuals and our healthcare system at risk.

At a recent visit to Chase Brexton Health Care in Glen Burnie, I joined Maryland leaders to highlight how this will affect Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which serve thousands of uninsured and Medicaid patients and provide care regardless of ability to pay. These centers are a critical safety net for Marylanders, and rising costs or reduced coverage would put even more strain on these essential services.

The stakes are high. Medicaid cuts and new federal policies under Trump’s Budget Bill are expected to take effect in 2027, and the Congressional Budget Office estimates 16 million people nationwide could lose coverage by 2034. Renewing ACA subsidies is essential to prevent this crisis - that’s why Democrats in Congress are holding the line.

As Comptroller, I will continue to fight for access to affordable healthcare and hold policymakers accountable for the decisions that directly affect our communities. Marylanders deserve healthcare they can afford — and safety nets that actually work.
