At this week's PMQs, I asked the Deputy Prime Minister whether or not he agreed with me that cuts to the Metropolitan Police are putting Londoners' safety at risk. His response wasn't encouraging - and didn't even recognise the cuts that are being made. Here's the clip: |
It's shocking. The number of 24/7 police front counters is dropping to just two, and ten are being cut altogether. The Met is having to cut 1,419 officers and staff this year. Parks Police and school liaison officers are being cut too.
Let's face it - the days of bobbies on the beat in our community feel very long ago.
Sadiq Khan is failing the Met and, by extension, all of us. He promised not to cut police front counters when he ran for re-election last year. He has broken that promise. |
The London Liberal Democrats won't stand for it. We are calling on the Government to step up and step in - releasing new funds for the Met in the budget, making sure they get their fair share of funding announced for police forces earlier this year, and calling for an immediate reversal of the shocking decision on police front counters. But we need your help - can you sign and share our petition today? |
Our London Assembly members Hina Bokhari and Gareth Roberts have been raising the alarm about this in the GLA - challenging the Mayor directly. |
