How the future can be better than the past

A personal message from Steven Nekhaila
Chair, Libertarian National Committee

John ,

I have a huge new goal for the Libertarian Party. I want us to equalize with the Democrats and Republicans within the next ten years. That means the LP will have...

* The same or more libertarian voters

* The same or more donors and activists

* Equal ballot status

* Equal or greater visibility

* Equal or greater representation in every elected body

These are big goals. There are also big reasons to believe we can achieve them in the coming decade. The next few messages will describe why it can be done and how it can be done. The HOW party begins here, with this message...

We need a new LIbertarian Party culture!

The old LP culture favored infighting over outreach. That must end.

The old LP focused on quality control. That version of Libertarian culture thought we could only succeed if all libertarians communicated the one best message in the one best way.

But some libertarians thought the best message was Brand X, while others thought it was Brand Y. Both sides in the quality control contest seemed to prefer a small-tent party that would only include people like them. A small party was exactly what we got. Membership and fundraising collapsed.

I want to elevate another version of libertarian culture. In that version, a preacher and a pornographer can dine together at an LP convention, disagree about important personal values, enjoy each other's company, and then collaborate to reduce state aggression. We must strengthen that ethos!

* The NEW LP favors outreach and recruitment over infighting.

* The NEW LP favors diverse messaging over fussy quality control, so long as everything we say advocates reduced state aggression.

* The NEW LP aims to be a "benefit store," where we compare the benefits our policies offer to the harms caused by the" products" the Democrats and Republicans sell.

* The NEW LP favors a Big Tent over a Small Tent.

* The NEW LP is a home for all kinds of libertarians - voluntaryist anarchists, limited-state libertarians, and small-government classical liberals - anyone who lands in the libertarian sector of the Nolan Chart.

* The NEW LP will also offer a warm and friendly community to millions of people with differing personal values and aesthetic preferences.

How will we do this? You will learn the details in future messages, so stay tuned, but four points are key...

1. We will avoid importing the toxic Left-Right culture war into our outreach.
2. Our messaging will serve purists and pragmatists at the same time.
3. We will describe the zero-aggression end-state that voluntaryists want to achieve, but also smaller steps that limited-state libertarians and classical liberals can embrace to move things in a zero-aggression direction.
4. We will stop fighting over our small differences until we've enacted our large agreements.

Let me say that again: We will stop fighting over our small differences until we've enacted our large agreements.

Where will this NEW ethos take us? Ask yourself this question...

If it were possible to make the Libertarian Party as big and powerful as the Democrats and Republicans, and do it in less than ten years, would you want that?

If your answer is yes, then be a part of the NEW Libertarian Party. Our upcoming messages will describe the plan in detail.

You can help by doing one easy thing starting now. Please open every message we send you, even if you don't have time to read it right away. Doing that one simple thing will help more people with Gmail and Yahoo addresses see our emails, rather than being diverted into spam and promotional folders.

Of course, we also hope you'll READ our messages. You won't know what we're doing if you don't.

Open our messages. Read them. Ponder them. And participate, as you feel so moved.

If you want to give us an early vote of encouragement, [link removed] please make a one-time contribution or start a monthly pledge . Please also let us know if we can publicize that you donated, using your name, but not the amount, to encourage others to do the same.

Sincerely,

Steven Nekhaila
