Dear Friend,

As a former Chair of Dignity in Dying, I am writing to you today to play my part to back the assisted dying Bill. I know so many people are putting a huge amount of time and effort into what has become the single largest campaign for end-of-life choice seen in my lifetime. No Bill has ever progressed this far and your generous support has been vital in reaching this point.

But our journey is far from over and we must not lose momentum now. Powerful opposition is mounting. Bishops in the House of Lords have made clear they intend to table an amendment that could block this life-changing Bill. Now, more than ever, we must stand united against those who seek to deny choice and compassion to terminally ill people.

The Bill is now at Committee Stage in the House of Lords, where every line will be debated and opponents will do everything they can to delay, weaken, or destroy it.

I find that deeply troubling. The Commons has spoken, the public overwhelmingly supports change, yet unelected members of the Lords threaten to stand in the way. That would not only be a tragedy for dying people, but a denial of the democratic will of both the Commons and the public.

Today Dignity in Dying launches a crowdfunder to ensure the campaign can meet this challenge head-on. If you can, please make a gift today to help the campaign protect the Bill and push it through this critical stage: www.dignityindying.org.uk/donate

This is the moment we must stand up for compassion, choice and democracy.

Every contribution, large or small, helps ensure unelected members of the House of Lords cannot silence the voices of the people.

Thank you for everything you’ve already done to bring us to this point. Together, we can make sure the assisted dying Bill becomes law.

With sincere thanks,

Professor Sir Graeme Catto FRSE
Past Chair, Dignity in Dying
