It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying Saturday night’s Bonfire Night celebrations, and Leader of Oldham Council Cllr Arooj Shah was out meeting the crowds, chatting with families, and soaking up the amazing atmosphere.

Cllr Shah joined the Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Eddie Moores, and the Mayoress, Kath Moores, to push the button on the dazzling fireworks display that lit up the night sky.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Oldham

Oldham town centre will burst into festive colour on Saturday 15 November as the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On Show returns.

The main stage show takes place from 5.30pm to 6.30pm outside the Old Town Hall, with performances from Oldham’s Fierce Dance and the Oldham Coliseum production ‘A Christmas Fair’.

Plus, Anton Benson’s Beauty and the Beast panto cast from the Queen Elizabeth Hall will grace the stage, alongside Ollie & Millie, Rodney the Reindeer and Oldham’s very own Frank Rothwell. As always Father Christmas will also be making an appearance!

Families can also look forward to meeting Bluey and Bingo, who will be appearing in the Market Hall from 2pm throughout the afternoon.

It's competition time: Be a star on the stage

We’re giving one lucky Oldham child the chance to join Father Christmas and special guests on stage at the switch-on, to push the button and officially turn on Oldham’s Christmas lights.

Entrants must be between five and 12 years old, live in Oldham, and be available between 5pm and 7pm on Saturday 15 November.

The competition closes at midnight on Wednesday 12 November.

Thanks to Oldham Council’s investment and the hard work of the club, the building has been brought back to life to benefit the community.

The building had to be closed due to significant disrepair, and would have stood derelict.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, and members of NxtGen Boxing, officially opened the new-look centre at a special event.

"You will create so many happy memories like we did"

The Mayor of Oldham Cllr Eddie Moores and his wife, the Mayoress Kath Moores, have shared fond memories of their time as foster carers as they urge others to take the step.

The couple started fostering in 1978 when they were both 25 and in 1981 Kath was appointed manager of a Family Group Home — a small children's home where they cared for up to 10 children in a family setting.

Between 1981 and 1989 the couple cared for 36 children at the Family Group Home, and the Moores provided them with a caring, safe and secure space to grow and thrive.
